With adjustments made correctly,
tooth contact should be similar to
that shown in illustration A below.
The contact area starts near the toe of the
gear and extends about 62.5 percent of the
tooth length. When checking paint
Impressions on gear teeth under heavy load,
the impressions will spread longer than
patterns made from bench test. This Is
normal. Mounted ring gear should show a
bearing toward the toe (small) end of the
tooth, never at heel (large) end. It is
Impossible to make gears and gear mounting
so rigid that no deflection will occur when full
torque Is applied. This deflection causes the
bearing to approach the heel of the tooth, and
the result is a concentration of load on the
top corner of the heel, and the tooth will
break.

If paint impressions are not correct, use examples of
tooth contact impression shown below, and make
necessary corrections.
