Steps 21 thru 25 are performed to check fourth range clutch running clearance.

Fourth clutch
Piston (2)
Put in position.

Put an external tanged clutch plate in

Put in position with flat side down.

Using 1/4-inch flat-tip screwdriver, put

Press on backing plate firmly and using

fourth clutch gage, check clearance

between backing plate and first internal
splined plate.
The clearance should be 0.064-0. 118
inch (1.63-3.00 mm). If the clear-
ance is correct, smaller end of
fourth clutch gage will fit between
hub and top and larger end of the gage
will not. If larger end of gage fits,
the clearance is too great. To reduce
clearance, replace thinner clutch
plates with new plates. If all plates
and the backing plate have been re-
placed and the clearance is too great,
replace piston with a thicker piston.
If the smaller end of the fourth
clutch gage will not fit, clearance
is too little. To Increase clearance,
replace piston with a thinner piston.
