EXHAUST SYSTEM
Exhaust gas is pushed out of the engine cylinders by the pistons. The gas goes out through the exhaust
tailpipe.
Exhaust Manifolds - There are two air-cooled manifolds on the engine. Each manifold has a uniform
cross section and a flange at one end for attaching the exhaust tubes.
Exhaust Tubes There are two exhaust tubes on the engine. The tubes are used to send exhaust gases
from the manifold to the turbocharger.
Turbocharger The turbocharger increases the overall efficiency of the engine. As the exhaust gases
pass through the turbocharger, they cause a turbine wheel and shaft to rotate. The shaft turns a
compressor wheel that draws in fresh air and compresses it into the engine cylinders.
Exhaust Pipes The exhaust pipes are used to send exhaust gases from the turbocharger to the
muffler.
Muffler The muffler lowers the noise made by the exhaust gases. It is covered by a shield for pro-
tecting personnel from the heat caused by the exhaust gases.
Tailpipe The tailpipe is used to send exhaust gases from the muffler out to the air. It has a cap to help
keep water from getting into the muffler.
