REMOVAL
WARNING
DO NOT handle brakeshoes, brakedrums, or other components unless area has
been properly cleaned. Asbestos dust, which can be dangerous if you touch it or
breathe it, may be on these components. Wear an approved filter mask and gloves.
NEVER use compressed air or a dry brush to clean brake components. Dust may be
removed using an industrial-type vacuum cleaner. Clean dust or mud away from
brake components with water and a wet, soft brush or cloth. Failure to follow this
warning may result in serious illness or death to personnel.
NOTE
It is not necessary to remove backing plate and service brake assembly from axle in
order to disassemble service brake assembly. Disassembly may be performed with
service brake assembly on axle or on work bench.
1.
Unhook swaged sleeve (1) from parking brake lever (2).
2.
Remove five nuts (3), capscrews (4), and backing plate (5) from axle (6).
