Line up scribe marks and put in position.

Six screws (3)
a. Have assistant hold up cage (1).
b. Start screws (3) into carrier (4).
c. Screw in, and tighten to 100-120 ft-lb
(135 - 163 N m) of torque using 13/16-
inch socket and torque wrench with
112-inch drive.
NOTE
The following step will establish pinion nominal dimension. This dimension is the distance from the face or finished
end of the installed pinion to the center line of the ring gear.
65. Differential
Ring and pinion
a. Using step plate and clamp assembly
carrier (4)
gear (5)
from pinion setting gage set, attach
it to carrier (4), locating step plate
screw over center of ring and pinion
gear (5).
b. Install another step plate under clamp
screw and tighten screw to hold plate
securely in place.
Step plates are necessary to project
the face of pinion gear so it can be
measured.
c. Be sure lugs on step plate straddle
the bearing staking marks on end of
ring and pinion gear (5).
d. Install assembled setting gage and
discs (number D-2) in carrier (4)
bearing bores.
Make sure bearing bores are clean
and free of nicks and burrs.
e. Adjust micrometer so it is directly
over end and at a 90-degree angle to
step plate.
