Tandem axle assembly removed (page 2-834).
Forward-rear axle shafts removed
(TM 9-2320-269-20-1).
Intermediate differential removed

REMOVAL
1. Yoke (1)
Two lock plates (2)
a. Using 3-lb ball-peen hammer and 3/8-
and four screws (3)
inch drive-pin punch, flatten tabs.
b. Using 9/16-inch socket and ratchet
handle with 1/2-inch drive, unscrew
and take out.
c. Get rid of lock plates (2).
2.
Upper bearing
a. Place hydraulic hand jack under shaft
cap (4)
(5), near yoke (6), and fit a wood
block between shaft (5) and jack.
b. Using jack, carefully raise shaft (5)
until cap (4) is forced out.
If necessary, use angle-nose slip-
joint pliers to twist out cap (4).
3.
Lower bearing
Place wood block against finger (8)
cap (7)
and, using 3-lb ball-peen hammer,
strike block sharply downward to free
lower cap (7).
Be sure to strike evenly so that cap
will not jam sideways In yoke. If
necessary, use slip-joint pliers to
twist out cap.

Yoke (6) and pro-
a. Tip universal cross (9) and slide yoke
peller shaft (5)
(6) out of yoke (1).
b. Remove jack and, with help from assist-
ant, lower shaft (5).
5. Bearing
Four screws (11)
a. Using 9116-inch socket and ratchet
retainer (10)
and lockwashers (12)
handle with 1/2-inch drive, unscrew
and take out.
b. Get rid of lockwashers (12).
