Cylinder block (1)
Crankshaft timing
Using dial indicator, check gear backlash.

If backlash Is more than 0.0005 to
shaft timing
0.0045 inch (0.013 to 0.114 mm
gear (3)
replace timing gear and Injection
pump drive gear (page 2-325).
2.
Camshaft timing
Using dial indicator, check and record end
gear (3)
play.
If end play is more than 0.0035 to
0.0115 inch (0.089 to 0.292 mm)
remove camshaft (page 2-184) and
replace the camshaft thrust plate.
3.
Cylinder block (1)
Crankshaft timing
Using dial indicator, check and record
gear (2)
end play.
If end play Is more than 0.004 to
0.010 inch (0.102 to 0.254 mm),
crankshaft thrust bearings or thrust
faces are worn and must be replaced
REMOVAL

Camshaft timing
Nut (4)
a.
Using scribe, matchmark gears
gear (3)
(2) and (3).
b.
Using 1 7/16-inch socket impact
wrench and air compressor, unscrew
and take off.

Camshaft (5)

Using gear puller, pull off.

If shims are present, tag for
gear (3)
installation.

Crankshaft timing
Using gear puller, pull off.
